Cheap Flights to Valencia

Cheap flights Powered by Cheap Flights

Founded more than 2,000 years ago by the Romans, Valencia has undergone numerous occupations and sieges since but today stands undaunted as the third-largest city in Spain.

Its location about halfway between Murcia and Barcelona on the Costa del Azahar ensures that a Mediterranean climate perseveres, setting the stage for its designation as a year-round tourist destination. The city spreads inland into the hills surrounding the port at its central core.

Travellers arriving from cheap flights to Valencia come across as a city at ease with both its past and present and no where is this more evident than in its architecture where modern buildings blend easily with the ancient ones in large part because of the application of not just care but also flair in their design. A startling example of this is the City of Arts and Sciences, the very much modern series of structures located in the former bed of the River Turia, since diverted elsewhere. It was designed by Valencian architect Santiago Calatrava and construction started in July 1996 and today stands as one of the world's finest examples of modern architecture. Indeed some have described it as ultra-modern and it may be so considering that more than a decade after its construction, it continues to resemble something out of the future.

The otherworldliness of the recently designed architecture fits well with the local population, often described as quirky. This is something exemplified by the calendar of festivals in Valencia and its environs which includes but is by no means limited to La Tomatina in nearby Bunol which involves 30,000 people throwing more than 200,000 pounds of ripe tomatoes at each other and Fallas de San Jose when the city erupts in a fantastic light show of fireworks culminating in the burning of huge caricatures representing each of the city areas.

Visitors have the choice of many destinations within the city. These include an Old Quarter and the nearby Barrio del Carmen, or el Carme to the locals, where local nightlife springs into action once the sun goes down. During the day, the area's medieval architecture is on full display with local cafes and bars serving the city's traditionally sweet hot chocolate to weary visitors looking to recover their strength after a day of sightseeing.

Its reputation may be starting to take on the ever-so-slightly tired feel thanks to one celebrity chef too many setting out to make it on location, but paella is one of the most common dishes in the country, and a good reason in itself to book flights to Spain. If prepared well using fresh ingredients, it is delicious and nutritious, a good combination to fuel your active holiday. The dish takes on particular importance in Valencia because it is considered to have originated here and as such is seen as a culinary masterpiece. Restaurants are plentiful throughout the city and many serve their own variation of the famous dish.

Whether you are a culture vulture aiming to get your fill of the old glories of centuries past or a food hunter on the lookout for the next palate pleaser, make sure to check the Cheapflights' travel guide to Spain for a more generic country profile before you set off.
