The IVAM Valencia Institute of Modern Art is geared at research into and publicising 20th-century art. Its programme of activities includes permanent collections, temporary exhibitions, conferences, courses, workshops and the publishing of works.
It includes the Julio González Centre, opened in 1989, and the Sala de la Muralla (Wall Room), in the basement of the front building, with remains of the city's old medieval fort, inaugurated in 1991. The IVAM is attached to the Department of Culture and Education of the Autonomous Government of Valencia.

Colegio Arte Mayor de la Seda (Higher Silk Art College)
The Colegio del Arte Mayor de la Seda is right in the heart of one of the areas most characteristic of Valencia, the Velluters district.
The silk industry was very important in Valencia in the Middle Ages and in 1474, the Velluters or Silk Workers' Guild was founded. The word "velluters" comes from the word "vellut", which means velvet. In 1479, several Silk and Velvet Worker Guild bylaws were enacted and the trade of "velluter" was established. These bylaws were approved by the City Council and by King Ferdinand the Catholic. Statutes were added to these and the Guild of Saint Jerome, patron saint of the Silk Workers' guild and of the Colegio del Arte Mayor de la Seda, was founded.
Fallero Museum
The first figure to be spared from burning in the history of Las Fallas festival dates from 1934. This was "Grandmother and Granddaughter", work of the artist Vicente Benedito, from the "falla" (papier mâché, wood and wax statues) of the Plaza del Mercado Central. It was taken on a light-hearted parade to the Palacio Municipal de la Exposición where it was placed.
From then onwards, those "ninots" (figures), chosen each year by popular vote to be the best, escaped ritual burning on the night of San Jose and were placed in the palace.
It was then decided to exhibit one "ninot" from each "falla" prior to setting up the statues in the streets. People would therefore be able see them all together and take a vote on which one to spare each year. The basements of the central market were chosen as the right place to house the exhibition. That was how the "Exposición del Ninot" began which, since 1942, has been held annually at the Lonja de la Seda (Silk Workers' Guildhall).
Cathedral Diocesan Museum
This contains two large canvases by Francisco de Goya, painted in 1799, of Saint Francis of Borja taking leave of his family and attending a dying man.
There are paintings by Rodrigo de Osona, Yáñez de la Almedina, Vicente Masip and Juan de Juanes, etc. (15th-16th centuries).
Original sculptures on the Gothic doorway of Los Apóstoles (14th century).
Gold and silver work: The world's largest Processional Monstrance (6 metres high), images-reliquary (14th and 15th centuries) and chalices, etc.
The whole cathedral is a museum, with paintings by Juan de Juanes y Yáñez (16th century) and by Pedro de Orrente (Saint Sebastian, 17th century).
Chapel of the Santo Cáliz de la Cena del Señor (Holy Grail of the Last Supper), 14th century: Reliquary of the Holy Grail and an alabaster altarpiece (14th century).
